...if he were still among us (oh, if only!); would he be spending most of his energy on being a husband/father/homemaker, a musician, a protester, or some combination of the above?

Re: What would John be doing...
Sat, June 18, 2005 - 5:56 PMThat's really a good question. Probably some combination along with experimenting with new things and ideas. You must admit, a lot has changed since 1980 and I think that he'd be intrigued with many new developments. He'd find some way to be different, which is what i love about him.

Re: What would John be doing...
Tue, June 21, 2005 - 9:19 AMWell, Harry "The Point" Nilsson died of a heart attack.
Frank Zappa had prostrate cancer.
Harry Chapin died in a car crash on the George Washington bridge over the Hudson River.
Paul McCartney died in a crash and was replaced by a robot about the time of Sgt. Pepper.
John Lennon would be 65 and touring with Elton John and Billy Joel?? (that might kill me) -

Re: What would John be doing...
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 2:18 PMVery true and scarey.
The sad thing is had he not been a victim on December 8, 1980 he may have ended up someone else's target later.
But I suspect there would have been a dozen more great songs for us to sing. Maybe he'd do guest spots with the All-STARR band. -

Re: What would John be doing...
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 2:31 PMHe would have prevented Michael Jackson form buying the Beatle songbook and selling it off for commercials; he would be taking our war to task and he would be awaiting the birth of his grandchildren... -

Re: What would John be doing...
Sun, July 3, 2005 - 12:10 AMKnowing the mind of Lennon, he would've spend a ton of bucks fighting the right wing element that's feeding the flames of war with our young boys and girls. I, for one, would've approached him with an idea. Perhaps this one:
Visual: George Bush giving State of the Union speech on TV.
Headline: THE PRESIDENT IS TRYING TO SAVE FACE.
2nd visual: Soldiers with faces charred.
Subhead: TOO BAD HE COULDN'T SAVE THEIR FACE.
(Rest in peace, John. You sang, you strummed, you wrote, you hummed ... you were the spark that raised our conciousness ... NO WAY would you ever have compromised your soul or you stardom to tour with Billy Joel and Elton John. You would've, however, produced some damn good music and films.) -

Re: What would John be doing...
Thu, August 4, 2005 - 8:31 AMJohn Lennon would have hated Mtv and Madonna. He would have went to live with his marxist friends. -

Re: What would John be doing...
Fri, August 5, 2005 - 2:22 AMJohn would be writing volume two of his memoirs, cursing the war in public, working on an album of avant-garde protest songs and still with Yoko. He'd probaly also be in trouble with the U.S. government if he still lived here.
He'd probably also have produced at least one album apiece for The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Swervedriver and X, turned down a knighthood and resisted a Beatles reunion. -
-
Re: What would John be doing...
Sun, August 7, 2005 - 4:05 PMKnowing John, he would've accepted a Hard Day's Nighthood.
Since he was also a great satirist (so cheeky and clever) he would've probably created a "no-reality" TV show starring Sean, Julian, Yoko and himself ... with guest appearances by Dylan, Paul & Ringo ...
I think he might've also hung out a lot with Michael Moore ... maybe also Bono ...
and would've had a field day commenting on American Idol ... as long as the industry creates cookie-cutter pop idols based on majority-acceptance it will always have allow a window of opportunity to those artists that go against the grain ... i.e., The Beatles, Sex Pistols ... etc.

Re: What would John be doing...
Thu, October 6, 2005 - 2:54 PMI am new to this tribem hi everyone!
I think maybe he would have been in this Tribe!
He seemed to be quite chatty, verbal, always something interesting to say or question.
I think he would have used the computer age to better connect with his fans, his friends, his people.
I think he would have made a lot of funny jokes about his friend Paul and the choices Paul has made on his solo path.
I think he would have been excited about the flow of information and would have not rested on his laurels.
I think he would have shown us how to be a hands-on parent and a fully present husband, without ever losing his own identity.
I think he would have musically experimented outside of his expected parameters out of curiousity and freshness.
I think he would have had a lot to say about our government in general, and president in particular.
I think he would still have been fully engaged in making the world a better place.
All that, plus a whole lot more.
:)

Re: What would John be doing...
Mon, November 21, 2005 - 7:49 PMIt is both amazing and inspiring to be reminded in all these posts above and in casual conversations out of the blue, the spirit of John Lennon - the endless possibilities his life held.
One recurring notion in each of your postings is his integrity... hey even should he have chosen to play with Elton and Billy, one can imagine that rather than John being dragged down into mindless commercialoism, he'd have lifted the others up into something brilliant.
I'm grateful we have what we have from him.

Re: What would John be doing...
Tue, November 22, 2005 - 10:48 AMSomewhere I read that Peter Boyle, the actor, was John's best friend in NYC (along with Yoko of course). Wonder what he'd say about John's doings, had he lived to be 65.
I'd like to think that sometime in the mid-80s, John would have decided to live in Napa, CA, and start his own winery under the label, Instant Karma. Or maybe Imagine. Or even Oceanchild.
He'd have been bitten by the 49ers' winning years, even occasionally enjoyed watching from the Niners' sideline.
He'd have become an American citizen. And probably would have worn a buzz cut until Yoko finally, out of exasperation, said, Give me hair!
Right now he'd be on tribe, writing wicked and sometimes funny replies on Bad advice on any subject tribe.
His computers would be Apples and he'd always have more than three of the latest high-end user models. Woz and Jobs probably would have asked him for advice on design, esp. music for their tv ads. With Apple, he would have come up with small portable digital music recorders a lot sooner.
He'd have told Michael Jackson to stick it up his ass for taking Revolution and licensing it to Nike.
He'd always lend a hand at the Healdsburg Luthier Festival, even helping some luthiers by buying their guitars and mandolins instead of just staying with Gibson.
More likely, he'd have teamed up with Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Jerry Garcia (he'd probably have taken Jerry to the detox centers), and Green Day rather than Billy Idol and Elton John. And because he'd have been living in the SF Bay Area in the 80s and onward, he'd have played Dawg music with David Grisman, because Jerry Garcia would have said, Come on, man. Ya jus gotta meet my friend Dave. He's a little guy but he's hell on eight strings. John'd probably have become enamored with Stefani Grappelli too and written jazzy swing-influenced music, because Grisman was always hanging out with Grappelli and vice versa. And so by now John'd have become an accomplished mandolinist and fiddler.
Herb Caen would have had snippets of him in his column. Yoko too but more so on John. John would have written an inspiring song after 9/11. And would be campaigning along with the Warren Beattys to stop the Goberinator and of course Dubya. And Gordon Getty would have thrown John a big bash for his 65th.
For the one hundred thirty-ninth time (but who's counting, Sean?), he'd probably be pressing his son to get married and have his grandkids. -

Re: What would John be doing...
Mon, November 28, 2005 - 5:20 PMWonderful clarity. You have captured my imagination, just like JL did.
He might have saved Jerry Garcia's life. Played at 4 or 5 "Bridge School" shows. He might have done for the North bay what Dylan did for Woodstock, New York in 1968. (or what Pylon did for Athens, Georgia in 1979).
Maybe he'd have had cartoons in local papers. I've seen Santana a bunch of times just walking with his family in Marin or Paul Kantner at the Booksmith on Haight Street. Why not a 65 year-old Lennon riding the ferry to Angel Island for a bike ride.
Most mportant, I would have seen him play some music. -
