Favorite John Vocal Moments

Probably my favorite vocal moment on any song, by anyone ever, belongs to John. On Abbey Road, on I Want You (She's So Heavy), in the middle he sings "heavyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!" and trails it into a scream that just goes up an up and disappears into a shriek of passion and torment. God!!!

Speaking of God, on the song of that name, from Plastic Ono Band, i looooooove at the end where he finishes, singing, "The dream is over-r-rrr . . ."

Also, i think i've mentioned this before, but on Happiness, how he begins, "She's not a girl who misses much . . . do-do-do-do-do-do . . . oh, yeah." When he says that "oh, yeah" it seems so incredibly the perfect center of the universe. I swear, it's like everything in the universe revolves around that "oh, yeah". There seems to be so much truth and strength in it, so much simple conviction, that the whole universe just submits to its authority.

there are so many others. anyone else?

My favorite vocal is when John sings the chorus on "Yes It Is"
"I could be happy, with you by my side..." he totally fucking nails it.
Other favorite vocals are "Slow Down" "This Boy" and obviously "Bad Boy"
So many early Beatle tracks are sorely over-looked, so I need to point these tracks out as examples of Lennon's amazing ability as a vocalist.

Right. On Yes it is, when he goes, "hurts my pride, yes it is, yes it is, oh yes it is . . . yeah." That ' yeah' - sweet.

And on This Boy, in the bridge, on the words "but oh myiyiyiyyyy" and "cryiyiyiyyyy"

I also think Hard Days Night is one of the best vocal performances of all time. John puts his total effort into every word. Most singers have high moments in a song but get lazy for most of it, forgetting to be completely 'there' the whole time.

Listen closely, in that song, at the end of Paul's second singing of the bridge, "When i'm home . . ." just as he's finishing singing "feeling you holding me tight, tight, yeah . . ." John comes in ahead of time underneath Paul's "yeah . . ." and says, "mmmm . . ." before going on to the final chorus. It's so cool.

army chow, army clothes, army boots, army car, owww

Too much monkey business, that's too much monkey business for me to be involved in.'

The Beatles Live at the BBC.

        'Everybody had a hard year

I used to love sitting in my room listening albums on my old turn table... I'd turn off one speaker so all I'd get was vocals.... The guy had an amazing voice. Listening to the three versions of Strawberry Fields on the CDs that came out a few years ago, it's wild to hear his voice change from demo to studio demo to what he thought was the master.

It's funny, i just found this old tape, a mix of really random music i made for a girl i had a crush on. I never gave it to her apparently. Anyway i was listening to it and just as i logged on to Tribe 'Don't Let Me Down' came on. I've always thought that song exemplified what i love about John the best. So raw and honest. So vulnerable.

About John, Paul. John sang the back verse on 'I've Got A Feeling', not Ringo. Eddie seems to side with me on this but you were the one who said it was Ringo who sang the back verse. Ringo would never sing 'wet dream'. John's 'Two Virgin's album cover made him blush every time he saw it.

Ed nailed it! Fuckin' thought I was losing it there for a moment. Thanks pal. And Starkey does shout "I've got blisters on my fingers" at the tail end of Helter Skelter. I watched this young tart do a rendition of Helter Skelter on Rockstar Supernova or whatever the fuck it's called last night (first time I ever tuned in to that show - honest) and she made the this audacious claim before the start of that number that Helter Skelter was the first 'punk rock' song ever written. I thought, "what the fuck....". You know, I've actually read that Paul McCartney had read somewhere in the late sixties that The Who were considered the loudest group in the world. In in answer to that claim he composed Helter Skelter (which is British speak for an amusement park slide). But the first punk song ever written? That's stretchin' it because even if Helter Skelter was written today, it would most certainly be put out by one of the many garden variety punk bands that exist today I agree, however, the 'punk ethic' as we understand it today didn't really exist as a concept or artform in 1968. For anyone to make the claim that Helter Skelter is first punk song is complete crap.

'That love is all, that love is everyone...' - coming back in on 'Tomorrow Never Knows.' Plus, yes, all of 'Don't Let Me Down' (especially the 'I'm in love for the first time' bit). All of 'I'm So Tired.' The background screams & yelps on 'Everybody's Got Something to Hide.' Wow - harder than I thought to pick a favourite, they keep piling up in my ear. John was a phenomenal singer, there are so many heartbreakingly perfect performances - real knockouts on every album - right down to the sly quiet 'Bye' during the count in to the Sgt Pepper reprise. I just love the voice. Can't think of one vocal that I DON'T like, actually. He's that good.

And ever since I was a kid just learning to tell the voices apart I've always thought that John & Paul singing together was just about the best 2-part harmony going ever. Fucking magic.

Definately "The Ballad Of John And Yoko" ... the whole darn song :o)

"Standing in the dock at Southampton,
Trying to get to Holland or France.
The man in the mac said, "You've got to turn back".
You know they didn't even give us a chance.
Christ you know it ain't easy,
You know how hard it can be.
    The way things are going
    They're going to crucify me.
Finally made the plane into Paris,
Honey mooning down by the Seine..."
